Papua-New Guinea's flag was adopted on July 1, 1971 when the country gained independence from Australia. A flag design competition resulted yielded the approved design, won by Susan Karike, a local art teacher. Black, red and yellow are traditional colors found in Papua-New Guinean art and clothing. The yellow bird represents freedom and the country beginning as an independent nation. The five stars symbolize the constellation Southern Cross, representing stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon.
