Just as he had done in uniting the Democratic Party with the donkey, cartoonist Thomas Nast merged Republicans with the elephant.  A cartoon he drew for Harper's Weekly in 1874 showed animals at a zoo, the elephant was labeled "The Republican Vote."   Ever since then the Republican Party and the elephant have been synonymous.
