Syria Flag

The Syrian flag was first adopted in 1958.  The flag incorporates the four Pan Arab colors, symbolizing the various dynasties that ruled the region throughout history.  Red represents the Khawarij, an Islamic group during the seventh century.  White symbolizes the Umayyad Dynasty, who used white as their color of mourning.  Black symbolizes the Prophet Mohammad as well as the Abbasid Caliphate.  Green, shown with two stars, represents the Fatimid Caliphate.
