To promote the Sydney International Food Festival Australian advertising agency WHYBIN/TBWA stuck to its long-time motto 'None of us are as good as all of us'. The creative team put their heads together to recreate 17 national flags using foods native to each nation.
The results are mouth watering. The yummy food photographs - they'll be in print and online ads - show off the vibrant colors of native vegetables, spices and fish to simulate each country's flag in mouth watering detail.
Italy's flag, a simple three-stripe design (green, white, red) uses fresh basil, pasta and bright red tomatoes. The more complex Brazil flag was recreated using a banana leaf, limes, pineapple and passion fruit. India's flag was made with curries, rice and a pappadum wafer. The French flag (another three-stripe design) shows off native blue cheese, brie and grapes. Using tuna sashami for the red circle on Japan's flag was simple but perfect. And the United States flag? Well, what else but hot dogs and buns complete with ketchup and mustard.
Begun in 2009, The Sydney International Food Festival, Australia's largest , had almost a million festival-goers in 2012. This year's event, set to kick off in October and last throughout the month. promises to be even larger. The festival is open to all including diners and food professionals.
Restaurants, bars and leading food businesses will show off what they do best with Let's Do Lunch, Hats Off Dinners and Pop-ups and Parties. A food photography competition called Shoot the Chef invites everyone to pick up their camera for a chance to win $2500.
Award winning international chefs will be a feature of the festival. Rene Redzepi, the creative genius behind Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, ranked second in the world, will headline a series of events in both Sydney and Melbourne. His colleague Alex Atala, the master chef from Brazil will also take part in demonstrations and tastings.
And the festival has truly gone nationwide. In addition to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Victoria will host food and cooking events.
