Everyone loves a birthday party, especially their own; and the Marine Corps is no different. November 10th is the Marine Corps founding and the celebration, in the form of a Marine Corps Ball, which takes place worldwide.
The term comes from the romantic days of Cinderella. The Ball is a glamorous event and is eagerly anticipated by all Marines and their spouses. It is the one "official" military event where spouses can participate fully.
While the birth date of the Marine Corps is November 10th, 1775, the birthday ball is generally celebrated the weekend before the actual birthday. Some commands and units will have the formal celebration the weekend after but in all units there will be some type of observance on the actual birthday.
The Balls have been held annually since 1925. Early birthday celebrations would take varied forms with most including dances. There were also mock battles, musical performances, pageants and sporting events.
All Marines dress in their proper military attire and their spouses are expected to wear formal evening wear. The formal evening wear should be appropriate and allow for the spouse to gracefully socialize.
Often held on the base or at a nearby hotel, tables are set with miniature Marne Corps flags used as decorations. One of the highlights of the Balls is the cake cutting ceremony. By tradition, the first slice of cake is given to the oldest Marine present, who in turn hands it off to the youngest Marine present, symbolizing the old and experienced Marines passing their knowledge to the new generation of Marines.
A pageant of current and historical Marine Corps uniforms is a part of many Balls and serves as a reminder and celebration of the history of the Corps.
Marines, known for their dedication to duty and discipline, never miss their birthday celebration. Whether in peace or war time, close to home or serving far from loved ones, Marines remember their special day and throw themselves a rousing party each November 10th.
