National flags often develop from historical and cultural elements. Geography may also play a role.
The South Africa flag is the only nation to use six colors in their flag's primary design. The colors and the Y design are meant to represent the convergence of two separate groups of people - those of the native South Africans, and those of the Europeans who colonized the country.
The Central African Republic uses five colors in its flag - blue, white, green, yellow and red. The white stripe in between stands for peace and unity. Liberia was founded by freed American slaves, who imitated the U.S. flag in an attempt to represent what they felt to be the true ideals of America.
